Coronavirus: inside the foodbanks

Earlier this year, The Sunday Times published this story about the effects of coronavirus and the impact this has had on increasing need for foodbanks. Ours communities need the local food bank more than ever, find out more about the Norwood and Brixton Foodbank and all the wonderful efforts of the volunteers who work there.

What is it like to volunteer at a food bank as the demand for their emergency packages soars? The photographer Charlie Clift found out.

When the photographer Charlie Clift found his workload drying up at the beginning of the lockdown, he struggled with government advice to stay at home and do nothing — so he decided to volunteer at his local food bank, the South London Warehouse, run from St Margaret’s Church in Streatham Hill, south London.

“I’m always eager to be busy and I think a lot of the other volunteers felt the same,” he says. “It’s been really sociable. I’ve met people who live right down the road from me, who I just wouldn’t have met otherwise. My role is mainly stacking the shelves, while others pack the boxes.”
